Vera's story

19 months old

When we returned from our 2024 Christmas break, we found a young, skinny, hissing stray with three kittens living in our hedge. We fed them up and took them to the SPCA. The kittens found homes, but their brave little mum didn’t. We’d admired her pluck, so we brought her back.

We in Thames and work in Auckland weekly or fortnightly. We knew it would be a challenge, but we wanted to give her a life beyond the cage. Vera has since become a lovely, social little house panther.
But she needs a proper pride. With just the two of us and long stretches home alone, we don’t think she’s living her best life.

Vera is very easy-going - “uncomplicated” sums her up well. She’s relaxed, adaptable, and not much rattles her (except small kids running at her!). Give her food security, a head scratch, her favourite pillow, and a game of foil ball soccer - she’s happy.

She enjoys human company and purrs readily, but she’s not a lap cat (yet). She slept on our bed her first night (rather forward!), but she’s not a huge one for couch snuggles.

She’s fairly but not overly vocal. Her main vocab is a friendly questioning trill.

Vera is tidy in her toileting - both in the litter tray and outside. Fastidious, even. No accidents ever. She’d likely adapt well to an indoor-only life, provided she’s not left alone all day.

The photos are in chronological order and document her journey from starving street mum to lush domestic “void”.

The bib in some photos is an anti-bird-catching device. It’s worked 100%. We put it on her during daylight hours and she’s completely relaxed about it. It looks a bit silly - but it works!

Her belongings include a few bibs, collars, scratching poles, and a comfy pet carrier. She is spayed, fully vaccinated, and chipped.
